HBO Max, the streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery, is set to expand its international presence with launches in the U.K. and Ireland on March 26. The streamer will be available directly via its URL, as well as through launch partners Sky and Prime Video. CEO and President of Global Streaming & Games at WBD, JB Perrette, and Andrew Georgiou, President and Managing Director for U.K. and Ireland and WBD Sports Europe, highlighted the opportunity in new markets, emphasizing the 'last mover advantage' of HBO Max. They argued that the streaming age has turned the traditional benefits of the first mover advantage on its head, and HBO Max's focus has been on harnessing the benefits of being the last to enter the market. With a strong content slate over the next 24 months, including new seasons of Euphoria and House of the Dragon, as well as the debut of Lanterns from DC Studios, HBO Max is positioning itself as a complementary and distinct service to other volume-driven streamers. The service will launch in the U.K. and Ireland with four pricing plans: Basic with Ads, Standard With Ads, Standard, and Premium, as well as a TNT Sports standalone or add-on plan. The executives did not discuss Netflix's deal for Warner Bros. or Paramount's bid for WBD in detail, but Perrette did mention the company's 'corporate transition' and acknowledged Netflix's appreciation for the HBO brand. The long-running relationship with Sky is changing with the launch of HBO Max directly to consumers, and the service will also be available to Sky subscribers. The streamer, available in over 110 markets worldwide, is touting its broad content lineup, with a handful of markets in Asia-Pacific and Africa still untapped. HBO Max launched in the U.S. in 2020 and has since expanded across Latin America, Europe, Central Asia, and Asia Pacific. WBD previously reported 128 million total streaming subscribers as of the end of September, with an expectation to have passed the 130 million mark by the end of 2025.
